Sleeping with my eyes open!

My hair is in the 'tween' stage.

You know when you get your hair cut really short, then it starts to grow back. You have to pay special attention to the 'kitchen' and keep it conditioned. Moisturize, Condition and keep it tied up. Then when it starts to grow back even more, you have to bust out the curling iron.

That was when I knew the madness had to stop.

So many things to deal with. Then you can't figure out if you want to grow it out OR keep it cut short.

Cut it
Grow it
Wear a Wig
Get it braided

Decisions, Decisions.

Well, I made the choice to get it braided.

NO ONE TOLD ME braids HURT THIS MUCH!!!!!!!!!!

OUCH!!!!!!

So here's some advice to anyone deciding to get their hair braided.

Pop 2 Advil BEFORE getting your hair braided. My goodness. I had a headache for 2 days straight.

Needless to say, I am LOVING the fact that I don't have to do it. The woman who braided my hair was so patient. Bless her heart.

Well, I have to keep it moisturized and tie it up at night but, other than that, it's a breeze.

I'm curious to see how long I'll be able to deal with this. It's starting to itch already and it's only been a week! *sigh*

Question: Have you ever braided your hair? Do you have any tips to share?

I haven't. But my daughter did it once while on vacation. She cried!! :) But looked cute!

Oh, and she had to apply sunscreen to her scalp!

I've never had braids but I do know that if they are too tight they can cause hair loss around the hairline where the hair is already at it's most fragile.

It should not hurt. I have had braids and the best ones did not hurt or cause hair. The worst ones were the ones that hurt. Braids should not be so tight that they hurt.

I'm a braider and your braids shouldn't ever be tight enough to make you have to take painkillers. That means it is too tight. It will cause hair loss. As far as the itching, use some seabreeze on a q-tip to cleanse the scalp and then some shea butter to moisturize the scalp. Sulfur8 makes a great anti itch braid spray but use it lightly or you hair will become too wet and with synthetic hair it can sour unless you wash frequently which can cause the frizzies, etc... LOL Next time tell your braider not to braid them so tightly. May not last as long but you'll still have your hair when you take them out. ;-)
The type of braids you have are only meant to be in for 3 wks at the most.

I've had braids on numerous occasions; from micros to cornrolls. As a matter of fact, I had my hair braided in cornrolls most of the time I was on deployment. I'd be sure to tie them up every night, so they'll last longer. I can never keep them in longer than two weeks, because I like to keep my hair conditioned and washed. I also like to take the braids lose and wear my hair out with the crinkle curls look before I wash again. A friend of mine gave me some oil to keep them moisturized, but I can't remember the name of it.

Yes, they can cause hair loss if they are too tight. I've never had that problem, and trust I've had them quite tight.

I have individual braids right now and I love them! i'd heard the tight braid horror stories, but my braider knew how to braid without making them too tight. You might have to switch to a different person next time.

Would you take hair advice from a white girl? (amuse me and read this anyway)
Vitamin E oil for the itch ~ it's THE BEST for dryness. I wasted a TON of money on all of the 'specialized' hair care products that a million AA moms suggested to me. And then I went to a Liberian woman's braiding salon so that she could give me some braiding tips and the vitamin E oil is what she used. Works like a charm.
Did you know that white people make 99% of the 'specialized' products? I no longer can will myself to buy anything that is intentionally misspelled. What's up with that, anyway?
Also, you can just throw on a net and wash as best you can with the braids in. Ya, the frizzies appear but it's better than washing without the net.

The braids look really good, by the way. Did you decide to grow it out?

Man, I've always envied the patience the 'braid women' have, both the braider and the braidee. I couldn't sit that long without alcohol and a tv.

They look really good on you in any case.

Lookin' good tho! I have a real sensitive scalp so I can't be having no braids, even with my sisterlocks I have to pop meds when I get them re-tightened.

welcome to my world. It looks great!

it shouldn't hurt tho like someone said. the braid stylist has a heavy hand. yup. you have to be careful on hair loss on the hairline.

there are sprays like Dr. Miracle's Braid relief formula that you can spray on your hair for relief.

Tie it at night with at silk scarf to keep it neat. Oil your scalp each night too. But mouthwatsh on your scalp when it gets itchy. The tingly sensation is a cleanser and helps with the itch.

After 2-3 weeks, time for a touch up or to take it out.

Good luck!

It looks good, but it does look painful...I can't even wear the false hair clips without getting a headache.

What about a short 'fro? Those always look so easy to keep. Some people can really pull it off and it looks great. I think it looks best if you are tall, thin and angular which is where you are going with all the weight loss. I used to be a skinny like that...now I've got curves. :)

I had to change my hair with the different body type(post babies, early 40's)...I went from the short pixie to longer soft waves(natural curl) like actress-model Lauren Hutton.

I've never had it done but I am so jealous of the fact that you don't have to do your hair everyday and it looks great!!!! That is awesome. How long can you leave them in?

Your braids look sooo cute! I wear my hair braided just about every summer. Keep it oiled especially your edges.

What you bad mamajama, hair looks good!! I agree with the others that say it shouldn't hurt that much. I do hair and have never had complains like that. Some people do have heavy hands and I've been a victim of a few. I'd recommend tea tree oil for moisturizing.

OMG, I'm tenderheaded so I KNOW! I don't have the patience anymore, next time I go I'm just getting simple twists with no hair added in.

Don't use spray moisturizer that much. It's what makes your head itch and makes your braids loose. To keep them up rub some hair mousse on top of the braids every night before you tie them up. To refresh your scalp, rub down your parts with a wash towel or qtip dabbed in witch hazel.

Braids shouldnt hurt...but the reality is...they do! They will feel looser after a few weeks when you have some growth and they loosen a bit...but I would not recommend getting them again after you take these out. If I were brave...I would send you a shot of my hairline...so you're just gonna have to take my word...tight braids can cause hair loss. :( But dont worry...one time shouldnt hurt.

They look good on you. Never had braids before. Thought about getting some but I don't know after hearing about how bad they hurt not just from you but from others as well. Hope it gets better for you.

Braids hurt so bad that I can't lay on my head for at least two nights. I haven't had them in years. I usually only put them in right before my due date in order to keep my hair looking nice after I give birth.

I just got micro braids today and it hurts like hell. They are way too tight and I'm not getting braids done again at the salon, i can happily live with the simple braids i make. It's 4 am where i live and i cant sleep because it hurts too much to put my head on my pillow. I've already taken 2 painkillers, but they haven't really done much. Im going to wet my hair now to see if the pain decreases. The pain is frustrating because it doesn't let me pay attention to anything
