My son has a fascination with sounding out words.
I decided to take it to the streets. The backyard that is.
He's learning -AT- (short sound)
I try to keep it simple and fun.
We take the first few letters of the alphabet to see the
words we can come up with by adding to the letters -AT-
For fun, I will put the new words in a sentence.
A-no
B-Bat (Where is my baseball bat?)
C-Cat (The cat likes to meow.)
D-no (Look at dat over there!) NO? ok. moving on.
E-no (It's time to EAT dinner!) yes, this is true but, we're working on the short sound of the -AT- I didn't want to confuse him. We'll come back to that later.
F-Fat (My daddy loves to grill fat juicy steaks on the grill)
G-no (Where's my GAT? I need to go and handle some business.) NO? ok. moving on.

that is precious learning and bonding time. what a fantastic simple tool.
hey girl!
Girl your "no" answers are killing me. LOL
Now you know I am laughing about "dat and gat"! I guess I better prepare for my turn (again) with the whole sidewalk chalk! Actually, my girls still love that! Maybe they can help teach too! ;)
@dc-hey big brother! ;)
@cbean-i got all excited when i saw your name highlighted, i thought for sure you started a blog. please start one. you have so much to say. please :)
@shelly-it's a boy! told you so :)
I had to laugh at dat! But who said it isn't a word, you hear it all the time in da streets. lol
You come up with the most creative ideas! Good job Mom and DJ.
I'm crackin' up ~ dat, gat!
That's a great idea. My daughter is really starting to figure out the letter thing too.
[WAVING HI]
LOL @ your NO sentences. They are too funny!!!!
I'm loving the new look to your page.
"Where's my G-at", you are killing me, lol.
Do you have certain materials that you are using to help with the pronunciations and the sounding out, I'm looking for something for Ava.
@ana--you know i'm crazy! LOL
@raquel--dats right :)
@ms. behaving--hey now! ;)
@tania--we started with the leapfrog (refrig magnet) DJ received it as a gift and you know mommas don't like noisy stuff but, the thing really helped when DJ was first learning to say sounds, etc.
A says--Ah
B says-B
and so on
you can do it without any visual aids but, my son is a visual person so hearing and seeing it helped him to understand how to sound out words.
OR you can get the leapfrog $5.99 letter factory DVD at walmart the same DVD is $10 at target. I'm just sayin! LOL
If you want we can chat on gmail and i can walk you through what i'm doing too. i love helping! ;)
He should be on Leno!
I'm LOL at your NO answers.. I'm crackin up ova hurr! LOL That's a great idea for a teaching exercise. Then again, you always have good ideas.
Great idea, Tanyetta. I bet he loved it; I know my girls would. :)
That is so cool! DJ is so smart!!! Unfortunately, I cant think of a sidewalk here where we can attempt something like that. Maybe at someone's poolside?
Tanyetta-I am writing this stuff down now and going to Wallyworld! thanks girl!
I'll probably have more questions at a later date. I am so clueless when it comes to this stuff. We've been working with a printable homeschool workbook but it doesn't have anything in it about helping kids sound out words and she is so ready to start reading.
