Don't be mean to me mommy.......

My son just told me this.

Here's what happened.

He left 2 trucks in my room and a few other toys in the hallway.

I said--DJ come here!

Pointing to his toys.

Your toys belong in your room or the toy chest in the family room. They don't belong all over the house.

Then he looks up at me and said....don't be mean to me mommy.

Ok, what am I supposed to say after that? I just stood there and felt like crying. real tears and all. I had no idea asking him to keep his toys where they belong was being mean. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't yell. I just told him to stop leaving his crap all over the house. sad

awww don't feel bad. That's not being mean. Kids have a wonderful way of knowing how to pull on our heart strings. When my babies do that (I've got 4 little ones) I say "Mommy is not being mean. I love you, and I love you enough to teach you good manners. " That usually helps with my four year old.
Hope that helps!

You're not being mean! Besides, if you aren't mean, then all of the toys WOULD be left around the house - so better to be mean, right??

PS- I feel like i know your little DJ because of your blog. I have a 5 yr old son that I wish I could introduce to your boy - they seem like they would get along just fine. Anyway, DJ really seems precious!

If I had a nickel for everytime my son said that, and he's only 3. Funny thing, though. I really thought he thought I was being mean to him. Then one day I picked him up from daycare and heard about 3 other kids say the same thing with the same pitiful look. I realized I had been played!

Oh my your a softy. That was not mean but your sweet son is learning to manipulate (like most kids do). I would let him know that you are not mean, you love him, now pick up your toys so we can have a good day.

you know better than letting that genius little boy get to you with his where did that come from comments! If I cried every time I heard I hate you, go away, you're not fair, you're nice to him... blah blah blah, cuz that's all I hear! ha. He's smart. Smile. Cuz he definitely has the cute thing going for him as well... look out!

Oh my goodness! What a cheeky monkey!!! Kids, I tell you! They are so manipulative these days. Tee has said to me, "Mommy, don't be angry with me" and "Mommy, you still love me, right?" - I tell ya!!!

This is how I would have responded: "If you think I am mean now, don't pick up your cars and see what happens."

So see, you are much nicer than me. Just tell him that.

I really like your blog, can you tell?
