Hair Grease (should I be using the sticky wave cream stuff)?
I brush his hair in 4 parts
both sides down
front down
back down
No less than 5 minutes later, his hair is doing a dance of it's own.

Please! Help. I'm trying to avoid going to the barbershop. I took him once and $20 for a little boys hair is NOT cool in my book. I love when they look at you sideways when you stand there waiting for your change. I don't need the pressure. Ugh!
Question: What is your hair routine? How can I get the "seasick" waves like the photo above?

Let me see if I can help you out here. I don't know how specific you want me to get so I'll just get real specific...
All it takes for me is wave grease, a du rag, and a brush. I use 360Style wave grease. It comes in a blue can thingy with downtown skyscrapers imprinted on it. As for a du rag, I don't use any particular one. I just use whatever is cheap. They all work for me. And for a brush, I use a soft-bristled one. I know some people that prefer hard-bristled but soft has always worked for me and I ain't heard not one complaint from my hair. You might want to go with soft too because I'm pretty sure DJ wont like a hard one. My mama brushed my hair with a hard-bristled brush back when I was a kid and it hurt like hell! Anyway, all this stuff can be bought at a beauty supply or Walmart.
Now what I do is I wet a face cloth with warm water and rub my head with it. Then I take about a nickel-sized amount of wave grease and rub it in my hair, starting with the top and back, then the sides. Then I take another nickel sized amount of wave grease and this time I start with the sides and then the top and back, just to make sure its equal all around. Then I brush: top forward, back down, sides a mixture of down and diagonal. Ok now try to follow me here. The reason why I brush my sides down AND diagonal is so that the waves on the sides will connect with the waves in the back and the waves on the top. I used to just brush my sides down and the waves would connect with the back, but not the top. The waves on the sides would just go straight towards my face. But now that I brush the sides down AND diagonally, the side waves connect with the back waves AND angle up and connect with the top waves, thus making "360" waves.
Ok so after brushing, I put on a du rag and wear it throughout the day. That's it. The only time I take the du rag off is to brush my hair some more, or put more grease in it after a few days. Then I put it back on. That's all there is to it.
Now DJ probably won't instantly get waves the next day or anything. It might take a while. After I cut my hair (I used to have braids), it took me weeks before my first waves appeared. But if you keep at it, he'll be all good. Hope this helps!
Oh yeah and $20 is way too much for a kid's haircut. I get my haircut, lining, and mustache trimmed and lined for only $13. You should find a new barber. But yeah, getting his hair cut is a MUST because once the hair grows too long, the waves start to turn into naps. But after a fresh haircut, the waves are gonna be so fresh, you're gonna have to bat all the little girls off DJ!
LOL!! My husband tried to get waves all his life! He know sports the bald look! Good luck, I think Greg has some great advice though.

my hubby forces the children to use 'the pink lotion'... luster's i think. He swears he had amazing waves when he was younger. but now he has no hair... hmm, perhaps you shouldn't take my advice. ha
Just my opinion of course, but I think the less he worries about his hair now the better. Keeping it moisturized with some coconut oil and cut low is all you should do. In my opinion.
good advice from greg for later. i cant be bothered right now, personally cause my boys are 2 & 5, and i just do as creolindc does, but definitely when they are older. im just lazy maybe. LOL!!
girl he African, his hair ain't suppose to lay down. LOL. Does every man's hair wave up? I think that truly depends on the texture of the hair.

I can offer no help! sorry- i haven't tried the "waves" yet with preston, but I want to know the info you find out- those waves look cool!
p.s. DJ is adorable with all his hair styles... I really LOVE the fro! I'm growing preston's out!

Well you wanna be careful of putting heavy pomades and greases in his hair that will only clog up his scalp and get dandruff! Try Carol's Daughter's or Miss Jesse's products. They are light and natural. I even use them on my hair. Miles has a crazy crop of hair and it is very dry and is super curly in some spots and nappy in others. I just cut it the other day. Good luck! My boo did a nice job writing the novel! My advice...Since DJ is still young you shouldn't worry too much about the waves. When he's old enough to care that's when he'll be able to do all of that. I say look for some HOME remedies because buying products can get costly. Carol's daughter and all those other natural products are fine but they have a special price. I've tried them in my hair and it seems that I'm not a returning customer...
