My son and I went to the library to pick up some books for our weekly reading.
I chose this book because of the illustrations on the cover. A mother holding her baby boy. PERFECT!
I opened and skimmed through the introduction to the book and quickly added it to our ever growing pile of books in our basket.
Here's an excerpt from the inside cover:
A mother expresses her everlasting love for her child in this warm, poetic picture book.
PERFECT!
I began to read the book to my son and it starts off really sweet with a mother holding her baby boy, looking him in the eyes and says:
Honey Baby, Sugar Child, Lord knows I love you so.
PERFECT!
The book goes on with some really heart touching moments and then blind sides me with this:
I'm gone always be yo sweet Ma'Dear, and you gone always be my baby.
Now, if you think I'm making this up, please go on down to your local library or order the book used from Amazon. Whatever you choose, please do me a favor and check this book out. You know just in case I'm trippin' ya dig?
I'm all for "ebonically" expressing yourself but, when it comes to reading books to my 3 year old, I have to draw the line.
Overall book review: Despite the 'slang' in the book, the overall premise of the book is magnificent. It's a book that highlights a mother's love for her son. You have to love that part. I would suggest you check the book out for yourself. The love of this mother for her son shines through on each and every page. Even the part when she told him, you gone always be my baby. That's deep. Wouldn't you agree? Yo.
*Sigh*

I must remove this from my amazon wishlist. Do.not.want.
Keep the ebonics out of the books, lol. That's a NONO.
ha ha! that's kind of funny! That book does look so sweet and wonderful, and i have a growing collection of the books I love. I'm all about exposing my kids to many different cultures and languages because I'm not Filipino, or Black, but i think i'll teach about ebonics when they are a little older!
that's too funny. Crazy what can go to print...
We have a book like that with the ebonics slang and you should hear my husband reading it...lol, hilarious is not the word!
It's all a matter of preference.
Have you read Queen Latifah's new children's book "Queen of the Scene?" It has a CD with it too. I almost bought it. Maybe the next visit to the bookstore.
