1. Scan the book content BEFORE check out time.
If not, you might end up with a book about a kid getting beat up by his daddy. What? you don't believe me? check this book out.
The book goes on to show this young man went on to accomplish great things.
While this is a great book, this isn't a great book to introduce to kids under the age of 8 because of the mature content.
2. Attend Story Time.
This is a great opportunity to introduce your child to the art of story telling.
Bonus: Treats are given out at the end!
3. Have your child pick out books that interest him.
Become the 'student' have your child read to you. Even if they're not old enough to read, they can tell the story through the pictures.

a tip to maximize the visit is DO NOT GIVE YOUR CHILD A CAN OF SODA AND CANDY BAR BEFORE YOU GO.

Girl we're going to have to go to the dayum library because I swear EVERY time we go to Target, Borders, Barnes and Nobles, Fred Meyers, etc my children SWEAR they are suppose to get new books AND video's. *thinking* I don't think they've been inside a library yet. It would surely be alot cheaper for us. (How do you keep him from coloring and writing in the library books?)
Ummm, that book was a lil special. Curse words and child abuse. Man if it was like that, then he doesn't need to be the topic of a children's book.

I always get online and check out the books that are there. I then check for something new. Then when we get there, I let her go to her favorite chair and get her favorite pop up book, while I bring tons of books to the table so she can choose. That way, helps me because she is more rambunctious than the average three year old.
I read your post yesterday, yet today I go to the library, get some books, la la la ... start reading one all curled up on the couch with Becca ... Monsters ... scary crazy monster book. Forgot to pre-screen that one!

I found a book called the Dangers of Strangers and it was bit creepy to me for 7 year olds to read. I don't have children (but I teach elementary school) so I do understand how seemingly innocent books can be a bit above what you expect.
You get bonus mommy points for this!
BTW, I find it very interesting that the aforementioned book has a reading level from ages 4-8, but the reviewer recommended it for grades 3-8 (youngest reader here would be 8). Hmmm.
