Parking Wars and Decisions

Have you ever encountered a "what if I do such and such" moment that made you think twice?  Well, I had one of those moments yesterday in the Naval Hospital Parking Lot.  There were about Five (5) EMPTY parking spots and to my delight, I drove into one of the spots only to realize why these spots were all EMPTY.

These signs were in front of the spaces.  Now, I had to sit and think for a moment.  I am NOT pregnant but, I do have a baby.  Is she considered NEWBORN (she's 6 months old) OR is she considered a baby and would I be able to explain to the officer if I were to get a ticket.  Needless to say, too much doubt clouded my desire to stay parked there.

I moved on down to the other spaces that were a good walking distance from the entrance.  The entire time I wondered "WHAT IF" I parked there.

Would I get a ticket?  How much would the ticket cost?

I remembered my favorite TV show, Parking Wars and it became clear that parking there would NOT be worth the ticket.

Question:  What would YOU have done in this situation? What age is considered NEWBORN?

  1. I would not have parked there and I guess newborn would be up to 6 weeks old.

  2. they have some at the mall as well, but they say for pregnant women or women with small children. I have small children, but I'm a mean mom, I park far away and make them walk.

  3. I'd say babies 3 months and younger qualify as newborns.

  4. I'm going to say that a) these are store monitored spots, not police monitored, so you wouldn't have gotten a ticket. I'm pretty sure the law doesn't enforce these, they're more about customer service.
and b) I'd say that if you were going to take your 6mo in her infant carrier then yes, you could park there. I'd bet that the intent is to keep you from having to lug the carrier all the way to the store and the shopping carts.

I've only ever seen those signs with just "Expectant Parking," which causes the question: What if you're in your 1st trimester and are not visibly pregnant? Should you carry a test around with you to prove your condition? ;-)
