Thanksgiving Dinner 2009

I had the bright idea to cook the entire Thanksgiving Dinner this year.  All by myself.  *sounds of people falling out of their chair*
Yeah, my point exactly.

Well, it all started out with a conversation about Family and Thanksgiving and what we're thankful for.  Not sure how it morphed into me jumping up and saying I would be cooking the entire dinner this year.  My husband didn't interrupt and just listened intently.  He thought this dinner would be like any other dinner.  I would come up with a great idea to cook something and he would be the one to cook it.  Yeah.  I know.  LOL

I started off with my local market advertisement for sales and recipe ideas.  My menu was pretty basic and I am very proud of how it turned out.

Turkey
Gravy
Stuffing
Macaroni and Cheese
Green Beans
Fried Cabbage w/green and red peppers
Dinner Rolls
Cranberry Sauce
Sweet Potato Pie
Yams with marshmallows on top<<--ok, he made that. :-)

Now let's talk about the reason why I cooked this dinner on SATURDAY instead of the intended Thanksgiving Day.

What had happened was..........

On Sunday my husband asked when I planned on buying the Turkey since Thanksgiving was on Thursday.  I told him that I have plenty of time and will be sure to buy the Turkey soon.  He mentioned that it would take quite a few days to defrost and I should probably buy it on Sunday to be sure it would be defrosted in time.  Well, needless to say, TUESDAY morning came and still NO TURKEY!<<---GASP!

I dropped DJ off at school and braved the store with Gracen.  I bought all the intended items for my dinner and proceeded to map out my cooking plan.

I ran out of time.  The turkey would NOT be ready in time for Thanksgiving.  My husband said don't worry, just cook it on the weekend.  I think he kind of felt sorry for me because I planned for this big dinner and here I was SLACKING.  You know I blamed him for not bugging me to get on top of buying the dang on turkey in enough time.  It's his fault that I didn't do it.  YUP, putting all the blame on him.  Hey, why not?

Friday night, I wrote out my game plan for the following cooking day.

I began cooking at 10am<<----I had every intention on starting at 8am but, that didn't happen. Again, someone let me sleep in and that threw my whole day off.  Ok, lemme stop blaming everybody else.  LOL

The dinner turned out fantastic and we were sitting down to eat by 5pm.  That was a big feat and I have to say I am very proud and will probably cook this Christmas Dinner as well.  Yeah, I said probably.  I will keep you posted on that.

The downside is all the dishes that await you after cooking a massive dinner.  I should have washed while I cooked.  Then I wouldn't have been looking at a mound of dishes at the end of the night.

Overall, this was a really great Holiday and I am very proud to say my first massive dinner.  He was in the vicinity chiming in with little tips like be sure to salt the water before adding the pasta, don't have the heat so high on the pots you don't want to kill the food.  You know sweet little tips like that.

I snacked here and there.  You know, taste testing so by the time dinner rolled around, I was STUFFED.  Blah.

Here are pictures of the feast.  I didn't get a photo of all the food laid out on the table but, here's a photo of the plate and the beautiful Turkey.  DELICIOUS and JUICY.

Fried Cabbage and Green/Red Peppers

Now that's a pretty turkey!!!

I even carved the turkey.  More like massacred the poor thing but, hey, at least I tried.  Darrin stood over me guiding me through it and cringing because I was slaughtering the thing! LOL

So, there you have it.  Our Thanksgiving Dinner cooked by Momma T.  Whew, I'm tired now.

Question:  HOw was your Thanksgiving Dinner?  What did you cook?

You GO!!! Hey, you're entitled to be late for Thanksgiving with your two little ones. *lol* Here's my unsolicited tip for mac & cheese: boil the noodles in chicken broth. Pamela's sister gave me that tip and it turned my dish from fab to fab-u-lous. :) I intend to tell all mac & cheese lovers I know! *lol* oh, and your turkey looked lovely!

Way to go! I cooked a scrumptious 20 lb turkey, a delicious 8 lb glazed ham, garlic herb mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, apple-walnut-sausage stuffing, green bean casserole, corn, croissants, caramel apple crunch pie, and a pumpkin pie. Everything (except the cheesecake) was made from scratch including the pie crusts and the cream soup for the green bean casserole. This post, Thanksgiving Dinner with the Cruz Family, has pictures of the food.

Hey - that meal looks good, especially the cabbage. We cooked the traditional thing, except we included ham, greens, and artichoke dip.

Great job, I’m so proud of you, Kim. Wish I could take the credit by saying the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, but alas, I haven’t cooked a big dinner, let alone, Thanksgiving dinner, since the nest became empty.

In addition, if I cooked, I’d have to do the ‘see food diet’; since I’m no longer doing that, I cannot afford to cook. I keep teasing LaTasha, I’m trying to get down to her size.

To Karoline, thanks for the pasta tip, will pass it along to those that cook mac-n-cheese. I’d even volunteer to be the food taster…hey, I know, nasty job, but someone has to do it. LOL
