Keeping your cool when your kid acts a fool.

LOOK AT THIS FACE!

Would you believe this is the same kid who had a fit in CVS because I told him NO, you cannot have chocolate, NO, you cannot have the chewing gum, NO, you cannot have anything in this store. I wanted to tell him, lookahere!---We are here to buy something for mommy. We never buy anything for mommy.

It's always stuff for everybody in the house except mommy. Can mommy get something for herself for a change? (hey, he's having a tantrum, why can't I)--Instead, after my last NO---I just bit my lip and prayed my turn in life would arrive sooner than later.

What makes kids think the candy by the register is actually for them? Whose idea was it to put this foolishness right up by the cash register? I loved the part when he fell out on the floor and screamed to the top of his lungs. I WANT CANDY! I WANT GUM! I WANT IT NOW! YOU ARE BEING MEAN TO ME!

I did what Dr. Leman suggests. I stepped OVER my child to get to the cash register and paid for my goods, picked him up and proceeded out the door. Not before he yelled, PLEASE MOMMA DON'T POP MY LEGS!!!!!

I ran to the car, buckled him in and drove off as quickly as I could. You know, before CPS could catch up with me!

You would NEVER believe he's capable of doing anything like that. Tonight is week 3 of a 6 part parenting series we're attending. This class couldn't have come at a right time. I cannot wait to report, once again, I'm failing at this thing called staying calm when your kid decides to act a fool.

Sigh.
Needless to say, before I made it out the parking lot, there was complete silence. I looked in the rearview mirror. Yes, you guessed it. He was asleep. I love this kid.

I have had soooooooooo many of these experiences. My favorite is when another mom gives you a look of encouragement that says, "You're doing fine! We've been through this too."

Just picture all of us giving you that look when DJ has his next public fit. It's something all moms are familiar with.

It's hard to believe, but being the mother of a high-spirited 3 yr old, I know it's possible, very possible.
